Your guide on how to maintain root hair health

Keratin is a protein that is essential to hair growth and is the holy grail of hair. Do you know how the hair structure actually works and how the roots affect the hair ? What makes them so important, how can they become damaged, and how can they be fixed ? During this session, you'll learn everything you need to know about your roots and how to ensure they're healthy and strong.

What is the difference between hair roots, hair bulbs and root follicles ?

There are two parts to every hair on our head: the hair shaft and the hair root.

  • The hair shaft is the visible part of our hair that emerges from our skin.
  • Hair roots are the parts of the hair below the surface of the skin. In the dermis and hypodermis layers of the skin, the root interacts with many other structures. The hair follicle is surrounded by a layer of skin and connective tissue that is connected to a sebaceous gland.
The root widens into a round hair bulb at the very base of the root hair cell. The hair papillae are located here, which provide blood to the hair root.

A hair shaft is, by contrast, the part of the hair that does not attach to a follicle. As a result, most of it is exposed to the skin's surface.

All of the remaining hair lies beneath the surface of the skin (in follicles). Hair roots are also known as hair shafts.

How do root hairs grow ?

Haar is composed of cells in the germinal matrix that undergo mitosis, or cell division, and move upward in the follicle to become keratinized.

Keratinized cells were once alive, but became filled with the keratin protein as they matured. The process resulted in them losing their organelles and dying.

Hair shafts originate from the group of cells that are constantly forming inside the hair bulb. It is the anagen phase of hair growth (the growth phase).

An individual hair grows at a rate of 1cm per month on our head. The hair on your scalp may live as long as six years before it dies and is replaced by new hair.

Age may cause hair to thin or baldness to develop. Hereditary hair loss is the main cause of hair loss as we age

Why are root hair cells long and thin ?

Depending on their fate, epidermal cells can either be trichoblasts (hair cells) or atrichoblasts (non-hair cells). Root hairs are long and thin, just like plant roots and plant cells.

As a result, water and minerals are easily absorbed and have a large surface area.

What type of tissue are root hairs ?

At the bottom of the follicle is the hair bulb, which is made up of epithelial cells, which line and protect the body’s surface.

The hair papilla is located inside the germinal matrix. It is composed of connective tissue and contains nerves and blood vessels that nourish the germinal matrix.

The most important tissue in the body is connective tissue, which creates protective barriers and transports substances within the body.

What is special about root hair ?

Numerous bodily tissues are contained within the roots of the hair. In addition to serving as a nutrient absorber, root hairs also act as a nutrient protector.

A strong, healthy head of hair starts from them. A hair that is unhealthy is thin and weak at the root, and damaged strands can cause hair breakage.

What can cause the hair roots to become damaged ?

Over styling our hair can damage the follicles in our hair when the hair is pulled tightly. Keep hair extensions, tight braids, tight ponytails, and tight buns to a minimum.
It can cause excessive breakage and damage to our hair if we use heat on it. Cleansing and conditioning products can enhance the smoothness and shine of straight hair. Curly hair requires products designed specifically for wavy textures.
Constrictions in blood vessels supply nutrients to the hair follicles are caused by stress hormones. Stress causes blood to be diverted from your skin to vital organs, resulting in the body's fight or flight response. A greater amount of hair is lost because the hair cycle enters the shedding phase.
Weakened hair is caused by chemically coloured, bleached, straightened, and permed hair. Your hair should not be subjected to too many procedures that weaken its strands. Make sure you use products that will strengthen and minimise damage to your hair if you do.
Medical conditions (such as an underactive or overactive thyroid) can lead to hair loss. Because your thyroid causes new hair to grow at the root, it plays a role in the process. The resulting imbalance causes your hair to become dry and brittle when you produce too little thyroid hormones.
In addition to being an autoimmune disorder, alopecia areata can also be triggered by hormonal changes. These cells release proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines that cause the hair to be rejected.

What can I do to get strong, healthy roots ?

    • Make sure to drink plenty of water: Water ensures that your hair follicles and scalp receive adequate moisture.
    • Massage of the scalp improves blood circulation, which allows hair follicles to receive the nutrients they require to grow.
    • A healthy diet that is rich in healthy fats, protein, vitamins, and minerals will do wonders for hair growth. The health of your hair follicles is improved by eating foods such as chicken, fish, eggs, nuts and leafy greens.
    • A healthy diet and supplements ensure that hair follicles get sufficient nutrients to promote hair growth.
    • Choose the right products: Make sure the products you use are appropriate for the type of hair you have. Choosing products with natural and nourishing ingredients that contain amino acids and strengthening properties is also important.

Can we reverse damage to our root hair ?

It is possible for the hair to become so damaged that it falls out. It depends on a number of factors whether our hair grows back after it has been damaged and has caused hair loss. A few medical conditions do not allow the hair to grow back.

The most common hair loss treatments include medications such as Finasteride, which prevents your body from converting testosterone into DHT, and Minoxidil, which is applied to areas where your hair is thinning. Both of these medications have side effects and only work for as long as they are taken.

What is the most effective way to solve damaged roots ?

A hair transplant is the most effective and permanent solution for hair loss. As opposed to over-the-counter medications, they are the most successful method of hair restoration, and are great for those who want a full head of hair.

During the process, hairs are taken from your back of the head and transferred to your balding area. The hair transplant surgeon sterilises the donor area and numbs it with a local anesthetic.

In the hands of an experienced surgeon, a hair transplant is a great way to combat hair loss. Select the right hair transplant surgeon, clinic, and method for you to ensure a successful hair transplant.
