Is It Normal for a 23-Year-Old to Lose Hair ?

Do you know that some people lose their hair as early as their twenties? Male pattern baldness, commonly known as androgenic alopecia, is a common cause of early balding. Men and women of all ages are affected by androgenic alopecia.

Is Hair Loss in Your Twenties Normal ?

Baldness normally develops gradually at the age of 20 or early adolescence. A receding hairline or hair thinning are some of the first signs of early balding. Remember that this form of baldness is common among teenagers and is perfectly natural.

According to the American Hair Loss Association, 25% of men have some kind of male pattern baldness before they become 20-21 years old.

Baldness Symptoms

The following are some balding symptoms:

Thinnishing gradually

Bald spots in patches

Hair loss all over the body

Baldness Stages

Doctors typically use the Hamilton–Norwood scale to assess the severity of balding, which divides male pattern baldness into seven phases, as indicated below:

Stage 1: The hairline is not receding significantly at this point.

Stage 2: You will notice a slight recession of the hairline around the temples in the second stage, possibly forming an m-shaped hairline.

Stage 3A: The hairline recedes dramatically and becomes noticeable around the temples, producing an M, V, or U pattern.

Stage 3 Vertex: Hair loss occurs on the top of the scalp at this stage (the vertex).

Stage 4: Hair loss in both locations becomes more noticeable during this stage. In this stage, though, you can still detect a hair band dividing the two places.

Stage 5: At this point, the band of hair that separates the balding spots begins to shorten, and the hairline takes on a "horseshoe" form.

Stage 6: You will only have extremely thin hair on the head at this stage of male pattern baldness.

Stage 7: This is the ultimate stage of hair loss, when the top of the scalp is entirely bald, leaving just a thin strip of hair along the side of the head.

Baldness in Your Twenties: What Causes It?

Male pattern baldness/hereditary is the most common cause of baldness in your twenties. Poor nutrition and diet, excessive alcohol intake, smoking, stress, and certain medical problems are other major reasons.

Balding Prevention Techniques

The following are some of the hair restoration techniques available at the New Jersey Hair Restoration Center to help avoid baldness:

FUT Hair Transplant: This is a minimally invasive and highly sophisticated procedure in which your surgeon removes the hair follicles from a strip of skin from your scalp (about 1 to 1.5 cm wide). These hair follicles are subsequently implanted into your scalp's balding patches.

Hair Transplantation Using FUE Techniques: It's a non-invasive hair restoration surgery that makes microscopic incisions on your scalp to transplant hair in the target locations with little scarring. It's done as an outpatient operation. It usually lasts between 2-4 hours, however it can last longer at times.

Non-surgical Alternatives: Minoxidil, an over-the-counter medicine, and Finasteride, a prescription-only medication, are two treatments for hair loss (for males). These treatments can be used alone or in conjunction with other treatments. (Plasma with a lot of platelets) Another non-surgical hair loss therapy is platelet-rich plasma (PRP).

Managing Hair Loss

If you've only recently begun to lose hair, reversing it is the best option. This, however, may not be viable or practicable for everyone. You can shave your head or cover it with caps or wigs.
